This book is a compilation of a number of mistakes the author made in his own retirement. It is organized around 12 questions you need to ask yourself before retiring. They are thought provoking questions, but didn't really provide me with many things I hadn't already considered. It was a good affirmation though of my current plans. The chapter on Medicare was especially informative though and frankly worth purchasing the book for.I read this book in a matter of a few days. It is a good read, especially for those who have not really thought much about their retirement.
I thought this book was by far the best simple read to a rather more complex series of events and choices than most people are prepared for. I read the first edition back in 2008 as I was nearing retirement at age 63. What I discovered was I should have read it at age 43, but of course it was not published yet.Then the bottom fell out of the economy and market and I didn't retire as planned. Instead, I had to wait until full retirement age (66) and realized the full value of the information that the author, Stan Hinden had provided in the book. as he went through his own retirement. I then read the updated 4th edition as I entered retirement.I thought the book was so valuable that I purchased three so I could give one each to our three boys, who are in their 40's.in my opinion, that is the age that this book should be read.
I give this book to all of my retiring friends. The author is very candid and honest. I did not get the feeling that he was attempting to sale me anything. The best part about this book is that it's all applicable to the average retiring person. One friend said she wish she had it before she made the decision to retire. Between this, Financial Peace University and Ernie J. Zelinski retirement books, a person can be financially set. Take the time to prepare and you'll be happier.
I bought this book for my brother's 62nd birthday and once I read some of his copy, I immediately sent for another copy for me and my husband. You know, noone actually teaches you how to retire and I feel like my husband and I were lost for awhile. We truly did not know what to do with ourselves after the initial fun of not working wore off. So I got my younger brother this book so he will know this information before he retires. Just the Medicare info alone is worth the price of the book because the author gives personal information as well as generic. I am very pleased with my purchase and can't wait to give it to my brother.
Very different from other retirement books as the author has been retired for many years & points out some of his mistakes in retirement. Good that he spends time on more than just the financial side of retirement, although he does a good job of covering that too. The social & mental parts of retirement are covered extensively (these are usually skipped in most retirement books). He also is very candid about his wife's battle with dementia & how that affected their retirement plans. I would classify this book as a "must read" for anyone considering retirement in the next few years as well as folks who are already retired.
This is the best book I've read about preparing to retire, and it couldn't have come at a better time for me. I think I'm going to have to retire by the end of this year, and I've taken note of several very important steps I need to complete before then.Stan Hinden's writing is so clear and inspiring that it is easy to read throughout. He answered several of my questions, especially about estate planning steps and recordkeeping for my family. Before I started reading Mr. Hinden's book, I knew I had lots of knowledge about saving for retirement and about taking money out of 401(k) accounts, etc., but the other areas in his book filled in my gaps. I encourage anyone planning for retirement, even a long time from now, to read this book immediately.

He writes from the practical perspective of one who is retired but also addresses mistakes he made. He covers the basics in an easy to understand way, but also holds the interest of those who have a fair understanding of financial planning..
