Even though I am in my senior years and I have always been a scientific minded kind of person I have begun to have an interest in some of the esoteric subjects. I recently purchased this huge 450 page soft cover book (The complete idiot’s guide to near-death experiences by P.M.H. Atwater with David H. Morgan) for a bargain price on Amazon.I have read numerous books on this topic in the past but this book covers the subject in more depth. The subject is presented in a clear and objective manner making it easy to understand. This book is organized into five detailed chapters. The first part (the experience/experiencer) gives an overview of the history, types of experiences and other information. The second part (afterward) covers lives turned upside down, undeniable aftereffects, differences between child and adult experiences and other issues. The third part (time out for questions) deals with are the dead really dead, heavy on research, the scientific naysayers (my favorite chapter), debunking the debunkers and religion’s got a gripe, too. The fourth part (taking a leap beyond) and explores the subject from a different perspective. The final part (back down to earth) covers brain/biology link, but are the claims true and other topics. There is also a lot of great information in the appendixes section.Even though reading this book did not convince me that near-death experiences cannot be explained by using the scientific method alone; nevertheless, there are some facts that certainly made me think more deeply on the subject. The Complete IDIOT'S Guide To Near-Death Experiences by P.M.H. Atwater with David H. Morgan is a must-have for everyone who is interested in the spiritual aspect of death, as well as in the latest developments of our knowledge of spiritual reality. It can be regarded as a easy-to-read encyclopedia on death and afterlife matters. One account about a near-death experience has been titled "Hold on to Your Socks for This One," and the same title can be applied to many of the other survival stories -- all of them are great reads. At the same time, they are classified in a way that expands our understanding of the afterlife. For instance, the authors analyze the differences of how children describe their journeys beyond in comparison to adults. As children are not conditioned by any religious concepts, in their reports darkness isn't always evil. Many children have reported about "the darkness that knows," describing being cradled in a womb-like darkness. The authors recall that light is not always God's light as well. As we know, word "Lucifer" means "light bearer" to begin with. In other words, our dualistic picture of the universe as a battlefield of light and darkness doesn't always hold up. Since the 60's researchers have come across cases of survivors who wanted to report the hellish kind of journeys they experienced. Yet for quite a long time these accounts were suppressed because of the belief that only bad people like murderers go to hell. Regrettably, studies don't confirm it. It is still not quite clear why in near-death situations some people like family oriented community activists found themselves in hell and others in heaven. The belief that a near-death experience produces only positive changes -- needs to undergo a profound revision as well. Some experiencers feed their egos; some change to the extent of alienation; some become difficult to live with... It was high time to reveal more facts about the afterlife and this book definitely leaves us with a considerable amount of new information. In addition, this book gives us an excellent 'further reading' list, a good glossary of pertinent words that otherwise may be confusing and hard to understand, a list of websites and 'get in touch' list of research organizations.There is one more thing that makes this book special -- its positive energy in spite of its morbid subject. It seems to stem from the authors' liberating intention to be truthful and a profound knowledge of their subject. It was a pleasure to read this book.
I haven't finished reading it, but this is a very well-written book with lots of good information. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see detailed results of the surveys of near-death "experiencers" that the author conducted. The book gives percentages and narrative descriptions. But it's hard to know how accurate the percentages are without seeing summaries of the raw data. Mostly, I feel that I'm getting the author's impressions of her interviews and surveys rather than actual data. Nevertheless, this is fun and interesting reading. I'll need to read more stories of experiencers but this is a very good start.
Since I sort of consider myself well informed about near death experiences I was interested to see if there was something in this book I didn't all ready know. Not so much, but it is sort of an encyclopedia of near death experiences. The only thing I wished was in it that isn't is something about the connection between near death experiences and the holographic universe theory. I don't think one can truly understand near death experiences unless they know and understand the implications of the holographic universe theory. Anyway I figured I'd add it to my NDE book collection.
This is like the bible of near-death experiences, written by a woman who's experienced 3 of her own. She leaves no stone unturned here, for anyone with an interest in NDEs, the book is loaded with first-hand accounts & answers many questions.
A very comprohensive work on near-death experinces that will keep you reading. There is much technical information along with case studies which are interesting. It doesn't have the personal touch as some others on this subject but it is a good read.

I'm still reading it! It is a bit of over kill. But that's the worst I can say. Better too much information than not enough, right? I'm over 3/4ths done and have enjoyed it's information. But if you are looking for expiriences. This has few. This is a guide book. Exsactly what it says. So don't be surprised. Enjoy.
