Club “Each prelude issue to DC’s new mega event is crazier than the one that came before.” —Nerdist “If you’re going to do a explosive saga, then you better pack your biggest guns. Guns don’t get much bigger than Snyder, Lee, Romita, Jr, and Kubert.” —Comicosity

The first two issues in this collected edition are proper preludes to the Dark Nights: Metal event, and are exciting episodes that dive head-first into the action, chalked full of teases of what is to come. While heavily steeped in DC canonical references (which are often confusing based on how they may become further contextualized or otherwise entirely retconned in the Rebirth era), these issues tease beloved characters, teams, and concepts that point to a explosive re-emergence within the DCU. How integral this delving into DC comics history will actually be to the main event remains to be seen in Dark Nights: Metal. The extended material in this collection offer context to the main themes of the impending “dark crisis†teases within the preludes, as well as pointers to clues sprinkled throughout Snyder’s New 52 run on Batman, around whom the event is primarily going to unfold. For those already invested invested in collecting DC comics’ greatest outings, the issues ripped from Final Crisis and The Return of Bruce Wayne (both by Grant Morrison of Bat-defining repute) will likely be repeats in your collection. In spite of this, I found the inclusion of these issues to be interesting for the purpose of teasing what themes will be explored, and what history will be expanded upon, in the upcoming event. For those up to date on New-52-and-beyond material for Batman and the Bat-family, the other issues included will likely be repeats, but again offer clues to what the upcoming event will cover, especially those clues embedded within Snyder’s run on Batman.Overall, while the preludes are the only explicitly “new†material included in this collection, for those excited to delve into the Dark Nights: Metal event, this edition will offer insight, context, and teases into the “dark crisis†to come, all wrapped up in a high-quality hardcover with a snazzy foil dust-cover.
I think I shot myself in the foot by thinking this would be as good as The City of Owl run by Snyder. Even equipped with the knowledge that this contained multiple stories/comics, it was almost too disjointed and at places confusing. It wasn't necessarily bad, it was just one of those things that halfway through I realized I was reading it just to finish it, and not because it was enjoyable (like Iron Fist on Netflix). If you are looking for a DC comic fix, do yourself a favor and just get City of Owls (all the good Batman sections in this are from City of Owls anyways).Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls (The New 52) (Batman (DC Comics Paperback))
I grabbed this collection because I heard good things about the metal series, and wanted to get into it. Disclaimer: I’m pretty new to comics and only read a few of Batman and justice league stories. My favorite was hush. I would not recommend this to people that aren’t familiar with the current Batman and justice league stories. The first two comics were pretty good, but after that the other stories were random and seemed out of place. I had no idea what was going on and how the stories related to each other.
Good start but short for the intro to metal in the new comic line, but great fillers from Final Crisis, and the Return of Bruce Wayne, which left me hanging, so I bought the entire volume of that story ark. And there are more stories to assemble and understand the Metal Event. 4/5 because I just wanted a little more issues for it
I finally gave into the hype and bought the whole series. I feel a little cheated. It’s phoned in , barely developed piece of halfassed work. This really could have been something if it had been given time to properly develop.
Read it but half way through it jumps to other comic books probably to explain the 52 dimensions but it was odd and really didn't fill in any gaps in the story.
Still reading this but wow. Packaging was fantastic, it was wrapped and nothings bent or warped pristine condition
