I am learning to paint with pastels and have a number of books on the subject. This one is somewhat different and was able to answer some of the questions I have, such as when do you use an underpainting, what kind, and why? After the obligatory discussions in the first part of the book, the second half takes you, start to finish, through a series of pastel paintings. There are plenty of in-progress pictures as well as explanations for the decisions made. This is exactly what I needed for this phase of learning and this book did it well. I expect that even experienced people can gain something from these demonstrations, because experience does not necessarily mean you have the background knowledge that might make your work better or easier to achieve what you want.
By far and away, my favorite of all the pastel books! Not just tips and techniques, but good information about the various types of pastels and even includes mention of oil pastels, which I am also interested in. Most authors barely give oil pastels mention, except to say they won't be discussed. Kudos to Ms. Price!!! I especially enjoy Ms. Prices' common sense approach to teaching. I would recommend this book for both the beginning pastelist and those with more advanced skills. I've read several books by different authors and found this one to be especially well written;
I have begun dabbling in pastels after working with acrylics for many years. My work just didn't seem to go the way I wanted, so I explored the various books out there and purchased several of what I thought would be great beginner books and also for those of us with some artistic background. I have to say "Painting with Pastels" by Maggie Price is my favorite! She covers all the necessary bits (types of pastels, papers, workspaces, choosing subject matter, composition, strokes, color (in many different ways - paper, underpainting, application), use w/watercolor), blending....and so much more. I also loved the sections where discussion, with appropriate figures to compliment the written work, on using either photos, slides, still life, landscape, and models, as your subject when using pastels. I now feel confident in my own work and know I can now expand into producing works of art that even I can be happy with and hopefully someday become an expert, well at least adequate, artist using pastels as my medium.
I'm just getting started with pastels and fell in love with this medium. Prior to this I have done oils for years, and teach in other mediums as well. I buy reference books all the time in the areas that interest me. PAINTING WITH PASTELS by Maggie Price is the best of those I have purchased. It seemed to be written just for me! It is VERY informative; the examples are marvelous! Landscapes are my favorites and there is a strong unit on them. I have a student who likes to do portraits and there is good advice for this too. However, if you are looking for guidance on painting animals there isn't any. But the important things like values, composition, focal points, lots of stuff on colors including layering colors, and much more is in this book. Thank you, Maggie Price!
Many instructive examples in this book and most helpful is The 500 Challenge which encourages beginners to work small (9 x 11 or 10 x 12) and fast (no more than an hour on each piece) to focus attention on learning and improving. Practice, practice, practice - this is good advice for any discipline and mirrors advice I received when I first worked with photography. The more you do, the more you see and learn.With little prior experience in pastels, this book provided me with a solid understanding of tools, methods, what to use and when, and answered practical questions such as how to store finished, infrared work.
Using examples of current pastel masters in addition to her own work, Maggie Price created a timeless book for anyone interested in furthering their art using pastels. I first devoured the book from beginning to end, and then went back to slowly develop exercises to parallel the demonstrations in the book.
Great book that explains the basics of working with pastels clearly and simply. Includes instructions on how to make your own sanded surface, expands on techniques used by well-known artists, and lots of useful demonstrations you can repeat yourself at home or in the field. Highly recommended and a reference guide you can return to over years to come.
Maggie's book covers many of the techniques for which this veteran artist is famous. The section on painting with light alone, makes this book an invaluable addition to any artist's library. Her writing style is clear and accesible whidh makes following along with the lessons simple. The examples of works in progress that Maggie provides walk you through each exercise effortlessly.If I were attempting to paint in pastels for the first time - or, if like me, you would like to kick your pastel painting up a notch, BUY THIS BOOK. You will be delighted!
