I bought this to compensate for the lack of Maltin movie guides since those are no longer being published. Despite its gigantic size, it isn't nearly as comprehensive (for the oddball films I'm interested in, at least). And the reviews are much less accurate -- meaning, of course, that I don't agree with them. I found I generally agree with about 96% of Maltin reviews, but VideoHound just doesn't seem as useful as a consumer guide. I haven't been able to pinpoint the editorial viewpoint well enough to use it as a predictor of my movie satisfaction (as one can do with a competent reviewer one doesn't agree with). If you like movies you need this book. For instance my wife and I were watching the original Pink Panther movie the other day. When Capucine (who played Peter Sellers wife) came on the screen my wife and I tried to figure out her age when the movie was made? Instead of a long and annoying internet search engine, it was easier to pick up this book, go to the Cast Index section and find not just her birth year 1933, which meant she was only 31 when the movie was made, but the year of her death 1990 which really surprised us. Along with a list of all the movies she had appeared in.Besides the alphabetical movie reviews which comprises the first 1,216 pages, you get a 203 page category index in case for example want to Netflex some Science Fiction movies, or Vampire movies etc. Then you get among other things the list of all the Academy Awards, British Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards, Writers Guild of America Awards and the easy to forget about but good for a laugh, the Golden Raspberry Award of the worst - who could forget that Dan Aykrod got worst actor for Caddyshack 2?There is also a Director Index and the book finishes with the Writers Index and then the Website Guide.So you can get 1,973 pages of helpful information all in one place for what you would spend going to a movie and getting a big popcorn and big drink. It's a deal you shouldn't miss out on. Unless you don't care anything about movies.
Love it!!! Finally--a replacement for my very old movie books. I thought I would never find an update after years of looking. Nobody seems to write these any more. This has all the information I need and is current. This book is the size of a dictionary, but then it has to be in order to hold everything that it does. I prefer written material over the internet when I want a quick synopsis without any spoilers and I am not overwhelmed with so much data. This is a great book to curl up with to plan your movie week.
The problem with this book is its size! Reminds me of an old Manhattan phone book. Wish they could have put it in two smaller volumes. It's very heavy; there's no room on the rather short shelf next to the chair, plus it's awkward to reach for when curious about a film that comes up on TV (We're not as technically hooked up to immediate online resources, so books are our go-to review method. No doubt in the minority on that...)
I have had the older version of Videohound on my shelf since the mid 1990's and purchased this as a necessary update. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the older information appears to all be included in the new volume. My wife and I use it for different purposes as she prefers movies that are actually good, while I like really bad ones. Videohound gives each of us what we want.
A very valuable resource for those who have little or no access to IMDB. For others, it makes for fun browsing, but so does IMDB. The reviews are generally fine, meaning that I agree with most of them, but they're brief. Supplemental lists are useful and some are not readily available elsewhere, but it's just not very convenient because it's so large and will age rapidly. I bought the current issue because I loved the book two years ago; now I have home internet and don't use the book much (though it's readily to hand).
This is the third edition of VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever we've bought. We keep it in the entertainment center with our DVDs, Videotapes (yes we still have some) and players. When we're watching a movie and someone says "I wonder what other movies Jessica Lange (or whoever) has been in" we pause the player and find out then and there. Only drawback is you don't get a full review for movies that have never made it to DVD, but the title is there so you know the movie exists and is only available on videotape. A must for the movie viewer, serious or just curious.

Its reviews are very down-to-earth, and it never takes itself too seriously.The movies are listed alphabetically, but it also has excellent indexes (by cast member, director, composer, writer, or cinematographer). So, if you enjoyed someone's work in one movie, you can look up what else he/she has contributed to in the past.It also has a category index, with some headings being fairly serious (such as "Amateur Sleuths") and others being a bit less so (such as the following: "Alien Babes," "Alien Beings--Benign," "Alien Beings--Vicious," "Alien Cops," and "Aliens Are People, Too").On the inside front cover, the "bones" rating scale is explained: Four Bones's explanation is "Masterful cinematic expression. Flawless or nearly so. Will want to recommend to complete strangers on the street." On the other end, "Woof! (No Bones)" means "Watching your neighbors vacation videos might be less painful. May be redeemed by stretches of unintentional amusement." (You can get all the rest of the explanations for the number of bones they rate something by checking out the inside front cover yourself. I just wanted to give you a feeling for the mindset of this movie guide.)As you've guessed, this is not a stuffy movie guide. They have a rating for pretty much everything out there, and the editors have diverse, even-handed taste. If you are a movie buff, I think this belongs in your collection of movie guides.
