These are an excellent help in learning to read Biblical Hebrew. I would give these cards five stars except for two short comings. #1 The cards do not include Strong's reference numbers which would make it exponentially easier to locate specific cards. #2 The cards do not include an English pronunciation of the Hebrew words. Nonetheless, these cards are an incredible asset. I am trying to memorize them in numerical order and have added the Strong's reference number and English pronunciation to the back of each card by looking up the English word in Strong's and then searching for the Hebrew word that matches the word on the card. It's time consuming but well worth the effort. Although not perfect, these cards seem to me to be the best ones available on the market.+
UPDATE: I did find a pdf on some website that did have the correct index for the cards, so my major complaint below is no longer true. However, I am keeping the review as a 1-star. After going through the box, there are multiple missing cards, duplicate cards, and cards that have misprints. (E.g. all of the information on one card was flipped from left to right. The number was on the right instead of the left, morphology info was on the opposite side, etc.) I would not trust these cards without triple checking them against whatever textbook you are using. The whole point of premade cards is to save time. These are a huge black hole of your time. You are better off to get blank cards and make your own.Do not use these cards if you are not using the Van Pelt Hebrew grammar. Here's why:There is an ingenious system to help you find a card you need. Each card has a number in the top right. It starts at 1 and goes all the way up to 1,000. Additionally there is a pdf that has all 1,000 words in alphabetical order along with the associated card number. So, for example, if you need to find the word father (av), you look up "av" on the pdf and see that it is 34. Now go to the box of cards flip over to card 34, and there it is...not "av". "Av" is actually card 4.THE NUMBERS DO NOT MATCH UP.This means that you could potentially flip through all 1000 cards before you find your word. This is hours of work to get the cards you need for your textbook. It is far easier to make your own than to deal with this mess. I'm sure you have the Zondervan textbook it is great, but do no use if you have anything else.I'm not sure how this could have happened. Someone obviously spent a lot of time putting together that pdf of 1,000 words for it to be all wrong. If you do not have the Van Pelt Grammar, STAY FAR AWAY.
These cards are just plain convenient for learning vocabulary. They are keyed into the chapters of Pratico and Van Pelt's Hebrew grammar. By buying this you save yourself a lot of time if you were thinking of making your own flash cards. They are also a good size to carry around with you, or keep at your desk. The only downside to these cards (which also goes for the Biblical Greek flashcards by Zondervan) is that the root of the word is not displayed on the card. When learning verbs especially I find it very helpful to know what the root is.Otherwise, they are very helpful as they tell you the lexical form, definition, what chapter they are in BBH (Basics of Biblical Hebrew), and how many times the word occurs within the Hebrew Bible. They are also keyed into 3 other Hebrew Grammars. While the order they come in is in the order that BBH gives them to you, on each card's lower left hand side on the back are keys to where this word can be found in the other grammars. I'm not sure how helpful this would be as you would have to sift through 1000 cards to find your words if you are learning from a different grammar. But for a companion to BBH, these cards are a nice help.Keep in mind when looking to buy this as a companion to the BBH grammar that there is a FREE resource online at Teknia.com. It's called Flashworks and is a flashcard program for both Biblical Greek (Mounce's version) and Biblical Hebrew (Pratico and Van Pelt). The software is keyed to the chapters in the grammars and you can select what chapters you want to do and even rank words by difficulty. However, I believe this software only goes so far as the grammar does (i.e. the software only has 490 words for you to learn), while these cards contain 1000 vocabulary words. Just something to keep in mind.Overall, you can go without this if you are learning Hebrew, but if you are a visual learner, it's a good tool.
I am currently in Hebrew 2 in my graduate studies. I waited too long in taking the second class as I remember almost nothing from the 1st course. These cards have helped me to bring back from the dead a lot of the vocal I thought I had lost. It also is helping me to re-learn the words I really thought I had down.My textbook is by Dr. Ross, but these cards cover the Hebrew grammars of Pratico/Van Pelt, Futato, and Seow as well. I like that they are organized by frequency. Helps me to know which ones to focus on. I also took all of the cards and then organized them by my textbook's chapters. Now I have an easy study guide that is better than my handmade cards (my Hebrew letters look not so good).Grab these for anyone you know who is studying Hebrew or wants to brush up on it. If you don't know much Biblical Hebrew and want to learn some of the words, then try these out for yourself. It might spark some independent study into God's Word.I recommend these for any student of Biblical Hebrew.
If I had any idea of how cheap and flimsy these "cards" were, I would never have purchased them. They are only slightly thicker than copy paper. This review is NOT regarding the usefulness for study OR the content of the information. It is purely in regard to the inferior quality of the materials. They are highly see-through under bright light as well. I wouldn't recommend these based solely on the thinness of the paper.
These flash cards have come in handy for my Elementary Hebrew course. My professor used Allen Ross’ grammar, so I’ve had to hunt through the cards to find the right ones. That being said, I recommend these for first year Hebrew.
