Good variety of projects and easy to follow instructions.
love this book! I got it for my lego obsessed kids, they are building like champs. What an awesome way to get the imagination going. They were looking for something to give them ideas on building and since my daughter is doing history and government studies this year I thought this would be perfect. For the three, yep you counted that right three, builds in this book it is great. It tells you what pieces you and and how many pieces you need to begin. This is helpful as we were missing quite a few. That being said I was hoping that there were more ideas of items to build in here but there are really just the three, albeit cool, there is The Empire State Building, The Eiffel tower and the Taj Majal. The Taj Majal is the biggest and takes the most pieces. I liked that the book was visual but it was only visual so if you were looking for a little more instruction, then this is not the book for you.
We've got two boys, 9 & 5, who are HUGE Lego fans and I don't even want to think about how many sets we've purchased over the years, or how much money we've invested in Legos overall (ouch!). I love that Legos promote non-screen activity, general creativity, logic and dexterity in kids, but hate how my boys, at least, are always focused on the next big set, but when they inevitably break it down after a while of playing with it, rarely go back and reassemble things from the blocks.We've got several of these workbook-style series of books, and they're a great inspiration to dig back into that pile of Legos and create something new. The instructions are clear, and done in the Lego-style, completely pictorially with numbers to indicate how many of each type of brick you need for the build. Most of the projects in the other editions aren't super detailed -- my nine-year-old, who does a lot of 16+ "expert" level sets, said they were too simple and "kinda boring" -- but this themed World Landmarks edition really hit the spot for our budding future architect. He's already dog-eared several projects he wants to start and is picking through his blocks to find the needed bricks.
I like the Taj Majal a lot and have one small building of it that was made with marble that came from the same mine as the original materials and built by the descendants of the original builders. I also like the occasional Lego building of it. I guess I am just not that picky. But when I am there, I am always surprised by the size of the grief from Shah Jahan. Mumtaz Mahal died in child birth with her 14th child. He should have just given her a break. ANYWAY.I don't actually have the pieces that would be necessary to build the Taj Mahal that is featured in this book. It is not just the white, because we have architectural white pieces, but the round and the arches.The two other projects included in this book are much easier to build and include more common pieces. I do like that it gives a building parts list to find before trying to build. That makes it much easier to construct.I was surprised that there were only 3 builds in here, especially since 2 of them are so easy. The Empire State Building takes 165 pieces to build. The Eiffel tower takes 193 pieces. The Taj Majal takes 465 pieces.So yes, basically for a 5 year old.The kits that can be used for the builds in this book are: LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box 10698, or LEGO Architecture Studio 21050 Playset, AND LEGO Classic Green Baseplate Supplement. She also says bricks you already have at home. But that is not practical for the Taj Mahal.
I ordered this book for my Lego obsessed 7 year old grandson! He has many, many Lego kits and so has accumulated a bin of "spare parts," as well. He seemed intrigued by the ideas in this book, even if he isn't aware of the "famous" buildings in it. He thought it would be fun to try and look through his many pieces to find ones suitable for the models in this book. Hopefully, this book will be a "jumping off" point to do some designing on his own, since he can piece a kit together in nothing flat! The pictures and diagrams in the "Build-It" book are a nice idea to take kids from following exact "blueprints" to creating structures with a little more imagination.
I like the idea but it's not quite as simple as they explain.First, the age level is around 5 and up, and allows them to build things that aren't typical Lego designs. Good deal. But the basis of the instructions is that they select from Legos they already have. NOT so easy, because many Legos already have movie-tie-in logos on them or are specialized. It's not easy to find the plain, simple, old school pieces this requires.So, taking the time to find the pieces to use was a killjoy. The designs are easy but just really hard for that age group to remain patient and find what they need.Definitely a book that needs a parent or friend's involvement to find pieces.
A huge fan of this series of creativity inspiring books, this one isn't as good as some of the others. My biggest issue is that it is extremely limited, offering directions for only three landmarks. The best part of this series is that it moves away from the movie-tie-in, model building, lego genre back into the more classic, "the only limit is your imagination. Unfortunately, the narrow focus here doesn't do much to activate such creativity. It is great if you or the legoist in your life burn to build the eifel tower, the Taj, or the Empire State. Not worth much beyond that.
Our kids like looking through these books to get ideas and figure out how to make things. Occasionally we will bag up the pieces for them and they can build it for them. We do have multiple large classic sets, and we still don't have all the pieces needed, so keep that in mind. They aren't as good as LEGO instructions, but they are still fairly good.This books focuses on landmarks, and get a bit more complex, and is kind of cool, our kids don't yet know all of them, but they still enjoy building them.
